Travertine: Natural Stone Texture & Architectural Warmth

Evoke the grandeur of ancient Rome with a finish that perfectly mimics the look and feel of natural cut stone. Travertine plaster brings rugged, earthy beauty and tactile warmth to modern interiors, offering a highly textured, open-grain aesthetic that grounds a space.

What It Is & How It’s Made

Inspired by the sedimentary rock used to build the Colosseum, Travertine plaster is a coarse-grained blend of aged slaked lime, larger marble aggregates, and natural minerals. During application, the plaster is troweled onto the wall in a thicker layer. As it begins to set, the artisan uses specialized tools to drag and tear the surface, creating distinct, porous pitting and natural "veins." The high points are then firmly burnished back down, resulting in a stunning contrast between the smooth, compressed peaks and the raw, recessed valleys.

Unique Characteristics

Authentic Stone Texture: The finish delivers a profound sense of natural masonry. We can customize the application to create subtle, organic pitting or a deeply textured, dramatic "split-rock" effect.

Directional Flow: The dragging technique allows us to introduce a visual grain to the wall. This can be applied horizontally to widen a room, or vertically to emphasize ceiling height, giving the space a distinct architectural rhythm.

Two-Tone Depth: Travertine acts as an incredible canvas for color washes or metallic glazes. By applying a secondary sheer tint over the cured plaster, the pigment settles heavily into the porous pits while wiping clean from the polished high spots, highlighting every detail of the texture.

Extreme Durability: Because it is applied thicker than standard polished stucco and is highly alkaline, it acts as a robust, breathable, and impact-resistant layer that turns back into solid stone as it cures.

Suitable Areas for Use

The substantial, earthy presence of Travertine makes it a favorite for K&R Stucco installations where texture is paramount:

Expansive Feature Walls: An excellent choice for large-scale walls in open-plan living areas, grounding the space with a natural, organic focal point.

Fireplace Surrounds & Chimney Breasts: The stone-like texture pairs beautifully with the warmth of a fire, recreating the feel of a solid masonry hearth.

Hallways & Entrance Foyers: Provides a highly durable, scuff-resistant surface for high-traffic zones while making a sophisticated first impression.

Commercial & Hospitality Venues: Highly effective in restaurants, spas, and luxury retail spaces that want to introduce an element of biophilic design and natural calm.
